not exactly... I have other artwork I can fiddle with, but, would still make head section too big IMO.

Is there a way to change the head area background color?

OR

Are there other themes that incorporate altering headers/images?

Almost every theme allows you to totally replace the header. This theme only allows you to place images into the header and the color expands. You can click on Themes->Configure (next to this theme) and turn off the site name & slogan which will reduce the side of the block.

Which themes allow this? I looked at 20 and 23... Didn't see this as an option. Even when I snubbed out the default images in 23, the blocks / placeholders that would contain the images remain.

23 definitely allows complete changing of the header image and the one below it. Complete header replacement had nothing to do with blocks. Click on Themes->Configure (to the right of 23) to see what I'm talking about. Here is an inspector with a modified 23: www.vanguardhomeinspections.com/
