Ian, I have been working on trying to make the background transparent in GIMP. The only one that I stand a shot with is the Jpg. image. After I add an alpha layer to it ( because jpg.s wont support transparency by themselves) I can get the image right but for some reason I cannot save it.   I don't even know how to begin with the gif. version.

Is that the same as inverting the image? When I did that I only saw a color change.  ???

No. You can remove a layer of the image, if it has one, then replace it with a transparent layer, or a colored layer of your choice.
