That's a good thought Bob.  I have a magnet on my main line, before the water gets to my water heater.  It is a foot long and clamps on both sides of the pipe, sealing the pipe all around with magnetism.  It's pretty powerful.  The reason ostensibly is to attract iron and remove it from the water.  As the iron is attracted, it attracts other metals.  This is supposed to be a cheap way to soften the water.  I cannot tell you if it works.

That photo looks like an interior shut off for an exterior hose.  Why a magnet would be needed there I don't know.

Magnet was what I thought it was.  Like Jay said, it supposedly help remove crap form the water.  But I would think over time and lots of crap removal, it would start to build up in the pipe and restrict flow.

I believe that was on the line for an outside faucet. Seems like a waste of money.
