With me it's all about the cost to do business.  I had a client whose parent's were buying a cabin in the middle of the state, which is about a 2.5hr drive one way.  They agreed to pay for my day, which at the time was 2 inspections a day.  The cabin was about 800 sq ft and the drive was actually quite scenic through the mountains.  I will travel to the job as long as my time is paid.

I set up a 30 mile radius, anything outside this area I charge a fuel surcharge.

For home inspections my radius is 45 miles before adding a fuel charge. On reinspects, I charge $100/hr, minimum one hour (includes travel time.) In my area I have referral bases in mainly three areas - Tampa/Riverview (where I live,) Tampa Wesley Chapel (NE) and Pinellas County. I get a lot of work from these three bases (all w/in 45 mile radius.)

For insurance inspections, I charge mileage once I leave my county...it's not necessarily the distance but the time committed to these - that takes away from other inspections. But I usually can get to these on my motorcyle which saves a ton of gas!  :D

Bob,
I have to ask. You can go to an insurance inspection via motorcycle?  Are they different in that they don't require the same use of equipment, like a ladder? Are they just specific item type inspections, like siding only for example?

Wind mitigation insurance inspections don't require roof access and the owners either have a ladder or pull down for attic access (of course I ask.) I do quite a few of these...
I also do manufactured home foundation inspections for tie downs to meet current FL 'code.'
And I've hooked up with an outfit in AZ where I do premises liability surveys on mobile home parks...basically a quick interview and park pics. Aside from residential inspections, I work to fill my gaps with inspections like these.
If I can be on my bike, I will....
