TOPIC: New Style Heater

New Style Heater 14 years 10 months ago #26415

I did an inspection yesterday and I’m not sure where to start. The occupant was the past owner who lost the home in foreclosure. The owner bought the home at auction and it was his first time at the home. He was flipping the home to my client who was going to rehab it and sell it. The old owner was at the inspection also.

In the inspection I noted that there was no power to the garage, lights in the kitchen and dining area did not work. The occupant informed us that he cut those lines in the attic “to keep the voices quiet”. :o

While I was checking the windows there was green dots spray painted in the corners of the windows. I did not ask why but the occupant volunteered that it was to “keep evil spirits out.”

In the attic the blown in insulation was in piles in several areas of the attic. I did ask about that, and he told me he used a leaf blower to do that. I did not ask why….

The furnace did not work, the thermostat and furnace had no power. Likely the product of him cutting lines, but he said he did not know why it wasn’t working. For heating he had a propane heater running in the living room with a fan behind it.

The dryer was placed in the entrance of the laundry room door. It had the discharge line run up and into the bottom of a plastic laundry basket. In the large opening of the basket was a filter, I guess to catch the lint. This was blowing heat out into the home. The only thing I thought to tell him was that he shouldn’t use a plastic vent line as it could start a fire….

From start to finish... there was even a sauna shower installed in a bedroom. Plumbing not installed very well, they had leaks and microbial contamination.

I'm sorry here, but the only problem I saw in your photos was the use of blue tape.  Personally I would have recommended Scotch tape - strong and if they use the clear stuff you can't see it.  Much cleaner application all around.

A little Simple Green on that "microbial contamination," if in fact there was any, is all that probably needed.

When making a tin foil beanie, does the shiney side face outward or inward?  I seem to remember the shinney side faces out since it is more reflective.  Others have said the dull side breaks up the thought waves better.
