TOPIC: A Floor By Any Other Name

Re: A Floor By Any Other Name 15 years 5 months ago #15175

I will post pictures.  Some will be silly, of course.

Mike - I am putting down Armstrong 3.5" white oak.  It is really nice stuff.  And HARD.  I broke a bit trying to drill a pilot hole for a finish nail on the first course.  Out of practice...  I calculate 162 courses, from living room wall to dining room wall.  So the first piece has to be square!

You will see pictures of progress long after I am done with that part.  When you see the last picture, I will be long done...

I took the nailer by the shop where I bought it.  They do repairs also.  It was having a hard time driving the brad deep enough to countersink it.  I had to notch the groove to accommodate the brad in the tongue.  They tested it, said it needed calibration, took it in back and in a couple of minutes it worked fine.  I did another course to make sure and all is well.  I can get going again...  that stalled me last evening.  I can work again later today...

With a manual hammer nailer, Jay, sometimes you have to really hit it hard and when the nail don't set properly, a nail set, #3 size is needed to drive it home.
Don't for get to spread your boards in advance so having joints to close together will not be an issue.

Just trying to help where I can Jay.  :) ;)[/color]

Thanks Marcel, as always.  Yes I was hitting it hard.  It has a ratchet and does not come out until the brad is set.  But it wasn't setting deep enough.  I took the nailer back to the place I bought it, which also does repairs, and they looked at it and said it needed "calibration."  They took it in back, came out minutes later and it works perfectly now.

I am already almost done with the living room.  I spread the pieces nicely and have a very pretty pattern.  It is terrific wood.  Finding snatches of time here and there is the hard part.  I will post pictures that will look like my progress.  Actually I will be way ahead of the pictures.  My biggest job will be tearing apart and packing up the china cabinets.  Yikes!

And if you break on of those china pieces, your goose is cooked.  ;D
