Your Father was from the old School alright. Mine said the same thing in different words.

"Be good at what you do and be diversified. One day you will need it."

I believe what he meant is the fact he survived the Great Depression by knowing different trades and kept working to raise his family.

It is a good position to be in when diversified. It is a lot easier to find work when in need.
