I wonder if cutting them back on an angle would make a difference. It does change the look of the house though but so does rotten ends. It would protect the most vulnerable part; the end grain. I have seen them capped but that looks uuugly!

Bert, I don't think it would matter. The overhang (or lack thereof) is cut to the same length as the flyaways. The roof is a kind of barn/vaulted ceiling mix....so it offers no protection if they were cut or not.

That wood looks soft and your photo is a good example of how much they shrink and demand caulking to fill the gaps. I understand from owners that the log walls can get very breezy.

Breezy for certain. Even the heat held by the logs isn't enough to keep it really warm...on the other hand, summer's can be very warm in log homes. The AC was running a lot today, and it was set to about 77!
