TOPIC: Dead!!

Re: Dead!! 14 years 2 months ago #35249

If standards and codes don't "require" or "prohibit" specific terminology, if it can be misunderstood then logic and common sense do!  And the word "dead" conveys something that can be easily misunderstood, and it potentially dangerous.  Even if the "standard" has no problem with that wording and enforces nothing, Mother Nature will enforce most anything if her laws are not obeyed.

Also, if someone is stressed and wants to quickly turn off a breaker, proper labeling makes that so much easier!  In my house I thought "Mary's room" was stupid since I was living there without any Marys!

As far as a *prescribed/defined* list of descriptions -  "CONV , LITE , BEDROOM etc.." don't think one exists. I've never seen one.

In the FPN notes there is a restriction on *transient conditions of occupancy* definitions in section 408.4, such as "Tim's Office, Dom's Botique" etc..

if/when I've been presented with a final inspection checklist, the AHJ's will reference 110.22 for your identification of OCPD's and Main disconnects.

110.22 Identification of Disconnecting Means.
(A) General - Each disconnecting means shall be legibly
marked to indicate its purpose unless located and arranged
so the purpose is evident. The marking shall be of
sufficient durability to withstand the environment involved.

408.4 Circuit directory or circuit Identification
Two new sentences have been added to this section.
1. Spare positions that contain unused overcurrent devices or switches shall be described accordingly.
2. No circuit shall be described in a manner that depends on transient conditions of occupancy.

That's about as much as I've got.

Bottom line is *dead* is a no go  :)

A big part of my background was owning a mid sized electrical contracting company for many many years.  You should see some of the garbage I have seen written on these labels.  People don't think when they write a description for a circuit that just maybe someday it will be someone new reading it and have absolutely no clue what it means, or goes to and thus could cause serious damage to someone or something.
