TOPIC: Can you do this?

Re: Can you do this? 15 years 4 months ago #16969

Joe, was this whole house, or for an appliance, or what? How did the current protection work?

The 200 amp main was located in a panelboard and it protected the branch circuit overcurrent devices that supplied the circuits in the dwelling.

It was in a new home I inspected.

I don't have the rest of the picture; but will search for one unless someone else has one showing the entire panelboard in the cabinet.

just a couple of things i see here, the non sheathed neutral, what is the purpose of bonding a panel back to the same spot the grounds all terminate (because it is required to have the bond?) if this is a new installation why does it look like the screw for the neutral bond has been arced? and what size was the GEC looks kind of small.

Jim:

This was brand new service equipment and that 200 amp CB was supplied by a Type SE Cable that enclosed the SEC's. The bare grounded conductor (neutral) meets the exception to 230.41.

Use of Type SE for this purpose is allowed by 230.43(7).

This equipment was not energized at this point during my inspection until I gave that releasing it to the utility company.

The MBJ is in the form of a strap and it is installed in a proper manner per 230.41.

The GEC is sized per Table 250.66 and is a 4 AWG.

Back then the GEC was to be run to the street side of the water meter and some of the water meters were near the curb in front of the house in this West Coast city.

Joe,

I had a discussion a few months ago with the head city electrical code inspector over the issue of double taps in panels. He indicated that the code was changed in July 08 not allowing it anymore, but before that it was ok unless the panel specifically disallowed it. What is your thoughts.
